Helsinki curbs emissions
In accordance with the Carbon-neutral Helsinki Action Plan for 2030, the city is reducing emissions, in particular, from transport, heating and construction.
Climate change is already here
Changed urban conditions require adapting to new challenges.
On this site
- Climate change
The climate has already changed, and there is no turning back. The extent of the climate change adaptation measures required depends on global emissions, but adapting to the new situation is essential.
- Mitigation
Carbon neutrality means striving to ensure that Helsinki’s operations do not cause global warming. The city’s goal is to reduce the direct emissions of the reference year 1990 by at least 80 per cent by 2030.
- Adaptation
Adaptation to climate change refers to the adaptation of nature and people to climate change by minimising disadvantages and utilising potential benefits. Cities play a special role in this.
- Carbon-negativity
Carbon negativity means that the emissions produced inside the city limits must be lower than its ability to sequester carbon within its geographical borders. Helsinki aims for carbon-negativity by 2040.
