Heat already causes health effects, and in the future, the climate will become even warmer, increasing the number of hot days. Helsinki must reduce the harmful effects of heat on vulnerable groups, among other things, and mitigate the development of the heat island phenomenon in the city by cooling down the city structure.
Cooling solutions are being built in senior centres, service homes and hospitals. The primary targets have been identified and different technical and passive cooling solutions have been implemented in these. In addition, the city has prepared a guide on the management of indoor thermal conditions. The drafting of a comprehensive plan heat preparation is also in progress (2023–).
